Ross R. Howell

Ross Howell, passed at age 62 on Friday, May 29, 2026. Ross was a long-time resident of Toledo and Sylvania, and worked as a State Auditor with the State of Ohio. He was a Scouting America Leader for over 2 decades, a Stephen's Minister at Epiphany Lutheran Church, and a volunteer at Feed Your Neighbor. Ross loved the outdoors. He spent his free time enjoying nature and outdoor activities- hiking, biking, kayaking, camping, with his greatest passion being scuba diving, a hobby adopted later in life. Ross was a certified SSI Open Water Diver, a Specialty Diver, and was working toward the certifications for Advanced Specialty Diver. His diving adventures in 2026 took him to WhiteStar Quarry, Gilboa Quarry, the Florida Keys, San Salvador Island Bahamas, and Lake Huron. He had eclectic taste in music and loved going to live performances of local bands and outdoor concerts with his friends. He never missed the Acoustics for Autism event held yearly in Maumee, Ohio. Ross's love of music extended to the arts; he enjoyed the theatrical performances at Epiphany Lutheran Church and held season tickets at the Toledo Repertoire Theater. He never missed a performance of The Christmas Carol. He passed on the Huron Explorer dive boat after scuba diving the SS Cedarville wreck in Lake Huron near Mackinaw City, Michigan. Thank you to the Boat Captain Mark, Dive Instructor Chris, Deck Hand and dive student David, his dive buddy Carol, and the Emmet County EMS for their valiant attempts to save him. Ross was preceded by his parents Margaret "Peggy" Howell and John Howell. He is survived by his sister Jennifer Grim and children Alison Howell, Evan Howell, and Trevor Howell. A Memorial Service will take place at 11 AM July 25th, 2026 at Epiphany Lutheran Church- 915 Reynolds Road, Toledo Ohio. Luncheon to follow the service. In lieu of flowers or plants, donations may be made in honor of Ross to: Epiphany Lutheran Church's Feed Your Neighbor, Toledo Metroparks, Acoustics for Autism, or the Toledo Repertoire Theater.
