Joe J. Zigray

Joseph J. Zigray 81 of Maumee, Ohio passed peacefully surrounded by his family on July 2, 2026. Born on September 2, 1944, the fourth son of Andrew and Mary (Kalasz) Zigray, Joe grew up in the Birmingham neighborhood of Toledo. Joe originally thought he would be a missionary and spent the first two years of high school at Divine Word Seminary, but God had other plans. After leaving Divine Word Joe attended Central Catholic High School where he met the love of his life Janice (Yeager) in English class. Alphabetical seating started a 65-year long romance. Joe and Janice celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 30th surrounded by their children Jackie (Scott) Flom, Jennifer (Pat) Poirier and Joellen (John) Bohm as well as their grandchildren Joe (Elena) Flom, Kennedy Bohm, Jake (Rachel) Flom, Regan Bohm, Andrew Bohm, and great -grandchildren Alex and Jon Flom After graduating with a degree in business from the University of Toledo in 1966, Joe embarked on a career as a CPA with Ernst and Ernst. In 1970 Joe took a job with St. Luke's Hospital rising to the role of Chief Financial Officer. Joe retired from St. Luke's in 2004. During his professional career Joe was a member of the Ohio Society of CPAs, member and past President of Northwest Ohio Healthcare Financial Management Association, member and past President of the Toledo Chapter of the Financial Executive Institute. He was the Board Chair of United Health Services and played a role in beginning the first Rib-Off in downtown Toledo. Joe also contributed his talents to several area boards including the former Sunset Retirement Communities as Treasurer, Lial Catholic School as Board Chair, Healthcare Underwriters Group of Ohio as Treasurer, and Central Catholic High School. Joe loved sailing and spent many hours on Lake Erie. A former Commodore of North Cape Yacht Club he and Janice loved cruising on their sailboat. Countless trips to the Lake Erie islands, Fourth of July at Cedar Point and two memorable trips to Mackinac filled their summers. When health issues made sailing difficult, he became a powerboater and enjoyed a beautiful wood Lyman for several summers. Joe also loved to snow ski. Many ski adventures in Northern Michigan, Colorado, and Lake Tahoe were had with family and friends. In time Joe taught his grandchildren to ski. Family ski trips came to include three generations on the slopes. As a member at Laurel Hill Swim and Tennis Club where he had a permanent court time every Monday night for several years he loved playing tennis with his daughters and friends. Joe was a big UT fan with season tickets to both football and basketball games. He and Janice were familiar faces in Lot 10 tailgating with their friends. This same group had standing dinner plans at Loma Linda's every Tuesday. Family and faith were foundational for Joe. A long-time member of St. Joan of Arc Joe was a regular at the 7:30am Sunday Mass. The rosary and daily prayers were a constant in his life. He is preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Mary, his brothers Bob, Bud, and Frank. In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by his brother Tom and nieces and nephews. Joe and Janice hosted Thanksgiving for the entire Zigray clan for more than 30 years often having over 50 people for dinner. Joe could be found carving the turkeys and sharing a glass or two of wine with his brothers. He was found at the head of the table at Sunday dinners where four generations gathered to spend time together. He could also be found in carline at Lial picking up grandchildren from school, or on the sidelines of the CYO fields, tennis courts, pool, track, or baseball diamond cheering his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family is grateful to his doctors at the University of Michigan for the 11 bonus years they had with him after his bone marrow transplant. They are also grateful to his primary care physician for saving his life during COVID. Services for Joe include a visitation at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH on Thursday, July 9th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary service at 6:30 p.m. Additional visitation will begin on Friday, July 10th at St. Joan of Arc Church, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, OH from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. He will rest at Resurrection Cemetery.
