Garnet Sarkisian

Garnet Louise Sarkisian, 94, of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully on Friday evening, December 30, 2022. Garnet was born February 17, 1928 in Toledo, OH., the daughter of Jimmy and Mildred (Becking) Shabnow. She graduated in 1947 from Woodward High School in Toledo. Garnet was happy to be the central figure in her children's lives and supported her husband Joe through their 71 years of marriage. When Garnet finished raising her own children she delighted in helping to care for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Countless hours were spent building blanket forts and playing outside in the sprinklers under grandma's watchful eye. Her grandchildren still rave about her pilaf, Texas sheet cakes, pita bread and no one could out do Grandma's stash of snack drawer goodies. In her spare time Garnet enjoyed bowling, golfing, crocheting, spending time with her sorority friends and helping with Mothers Club. She was also a talented artist and she was particularly good at sketching portraits. Garnet would often host family dinners and a spirited game of Pinocle on Friday nights. She enjoyed traveling to Florida every year with her husband and their trips to Paris and Spain. Garnet was perhaps best known to her grandchildren as the hippest Grandma around. She loved shopping for and wearing the latest fashion trends. Her granddaughters could often be found borrowing her clothes. Garnet's beloved husband, Joe Sarkisian proceeded her in death on July 6, 2019. She was also proceeded in death by her parents, twin sister Janette Greenfield and step sister Janet Simmons. Surviving her are her children, Karen Lee Palka, Joseph Lee Sarkisian; her brothers Ed (Bobbie) and Gene Shabnow; her 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Friday January 6 at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Swanton, Ohio at Swan Creek Township cemetery.
