Thomas L. Oess

Thomas Leonard Oess, 79, of Maumee, Ohio passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, surrounded by his family at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Tom was born January 7, 1947, in Toledo to Joseph & Helene Oess. Tom grew up in the Old South End (Darby) and attended Immaculate Conception. He went on to graduate from Central Catholic in 1964. It was at Immaculate Conception where Tom met the love of his life Mary Ann, they dated in high school and were married on July 18, 1969. They were blessed to have enjoyed 54 years of marriage during which their lives were enhanced with three sons and six grandchildren. Tom proudly served his country in the US Army from 1966-1969. Upon his return, he resumed his career at Champion Spark Plug for over 30 years. He had several different roles but spent the better part as purchasing manager. Tom was an active member at St. Joan of Arc, where he was a founding member. He served on the Parish Council and was a Eucharistic Minister. Tom was heavily involved in CYO basketball at SJA. He coached for more than 25 years and was able to connect with hundreds of families. He loved connecting with people. In 1994 he received the Paul Johnson Adult Contributor Award from CYO. He also was the SJA basketball commissioner for 10 years. Tom's love for sports didn't stop there, he was an avid golfer, playing several times a week with different groups, including his Favorite Foursome, as he would refer to when he golfed with his 3 sons. Tom loved attending his grandkids and great nieces and nephews sporting events and activities. He enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams - Detroit Tigers & Lions, OSU Buckeyes, and especially attending the University of Toledo Rockets and Central Catholic games. He was an original member of the Shillelagh Club and many other groups over the years, and was recently named to CCHS Hall of Fame class of 2026 with a Citizens Award. Tom loved to travel with his 'sweetie', where they would make annual trips to Hilton Head Island with family and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, parents Joseph & Helene and sister and brother-in-law Julie and Bill Kolva. He is survived by his sons, Andrew (Andrea), Timothy (Katie), and Michael (Mari); grandchildren Avery, Luke, Aiden, Reese, Karis and Carson; sister Pat Takats (best friend Bob); sister-in-law Barabra Bagnato (Edward). He was very close to his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews; and his neighborhood friends the Darby Group, for over 75 years. Family and friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, OH on Thursday, April 30th from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. where a Scripture Service and Sharing of Memories will be held at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 1st at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 5856 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, OH where the family will welcome visitors at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family asks you to consider a donation to either Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Central Catholic High School. We would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hospice for making Dad comfortable on his journey to be reunited with his Bride. We will always remember the love and dedication to his family and his generous heart that touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Give a little, get a lot back HEY GRANDPA… WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH
