Jose "Joey" Martinez

José Martinez (Joey), 58 years old, a local self-taught artist from South Toledo was called home to heaven on Sunday, November 30, 2014 after experiencing an unexpected health condition at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He was born on March 19, 1956 in Toledo, Ohio to the late Eusebio (Sam) and Concepción (Concha nee Cortinas) Martinez. José, known to many as Joey, was a very talented artist and member of OLA – Organization of Latino Artists. His contributions include the painting of over 30 murals in the city in an effort to bring beauty, vibrancy, and expression through art to South Toledo, an area of the city that he held close to his heart. Joey worked with area troubled youth in hopes to help transform their way of thinking. He often shared his story on how painting and art had a profound impact on his life and changed his own way of thinking. He was an active supporter of the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center and La Galeria. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Joey leaves behind to cherish his memory, his son Joe (Bambi) Martinez of Las Vegas, NV; his daughter Amie (Roberto) Avelar; his grandchildren Joe Jr., Felipe, Concepción (Chita), Emiliano, Monica, and Roberto III ; his siblings Thomas Martinez, Balbina (Tomas) Ruiz, Sabina (Martin) Elizondo, Juliana (Edmundo) Ruiz, Henry Martinez, Lupe (Carlos) Jaso, Suzie Martinez, Maria (Cuca) Martinez, Juan (Carol) Martinez of Angola, IN; several nieces and nephews; and his girlfriend Monica Carrillo;. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Cayetano (Carl) Martinez and Simon Martinez; nieces Gloria Ruiz, Sandi Elizondo, and April Martinez; nephew Cayetano (Carl Jr.) Martinez. The family will receive guests at the Coyle Funeral Home 1770 S. Reynolds Road, Toledo, Oh on Sunday, December 7th from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. Guests are welcomed to pay their final respects beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Monday, December 8th and to join the family for a Mass of Christian burial at 12:00 p.m. at Sts.
