John S. Mermer

John S. Mermer, 80, of Perrysburg, Ohio passed away Friday, May 1, 2015 in Hospice of NW Ohio, Perrysburg. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 10, 1934 to Clare and Francis Mermer. John is survived by his wife, Joanne; children, Michael, Mary Jo Welly (Steve), John (Belinda), Patty Luciano (Gene), and Jennifer Lieb (Ben); his sister Sally Bullimore (Doug) and sister in laws Marie Brannan and Carolyn Mermer. He also leaves behind nine adoring grandchildren, Nicholas and Michael Whitehill, Connor and Quinn Welly, Jessica and Jenna Mermer, and John, Matthew, and Vivien Lieb. John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Noel Mermer, and his daughter in law, Kathy Mermer. John graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1952 and the University of Toledo in 1960. He proudly served in the U. S. Army from 1954-1956. In 1964 he joined the Mather Company, where he served as Vice President and Treasurer. John was a very patriotic man. His love of country was shown every 4th of July with a celebration worthy of a true patriot. One of his favorite pastimes was reading, especially history and military books. He enjoyed playing golf and sailing with his family. He was an enthusiastic tennis player, and loved building and flying remote control model airplanes. He shared these pastimes with his children and grandchildren. He and Joanne would spend the winter months at their home on Amelia Island Plantation in Florida. Over the course of his life, John belonged to many clubs including Laurel Hills Swim and Tennis Club, Belmont Country Club, Amelia Island Plantation Club, and the Black Sheep Remote Control Club. He also served as member/director of the Wood County Mental Health Association and more recently the St. Rose Endowment Fund. John was the patriarch of the Mermer family, and his warmth and sense of humor will be forever missed. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Monday, May 4 from 4-8 p.m., with a Scripture Service at 7. The funeral will begin in the mortuary on Tuesday, May 5 at 10 a.m. followed by a mass at St. Rose Catholic Church in Perrysburg at 10:30. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery.
