Gertrude L.M. Wevers

Gertruda L.M. Wevers, aka Trude, 95 years old from Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. Trude was born in the Netherlands on April 25, 1931, to Antonius and Arnolda (Janssen) Rasing. She was the third of six children (2 older sisters and 3 younger brothers). Trude studied nursing in the Netherlands for four years. She was also a very talented seamstress who made her own clothes and artistically designed and sewed children's clothing and children's storybook tapestries. She played rhythm guitar and loved singing. Throughout her life she was renowned for her exceptionally beautiful soprano voice. Through music, Trude met and fell in love with Alcon Wevers and they were married in Holland on February 7, 1959. They were wedded for 53 wonderful years. While still in the Netherlands, the couple were blessed with their first child, Ben, and in 1962 the family moved to the United States, settling in Toledo, Ohio. Shortly thereafter, their twin daughters Marie and Iris were born, and a few years later the arrival of youngest daughter Orchid completed the family. While the children were still in grade school, Trude and Alcon formed the "Wevers Family Band" which played international music featuring Trude who sang songs in 13 languages as the main soloist, and the daughters who sang and harmonized. (Trude was actually fluent in speaking four languages, occasionally translating documents for the local International Institute). The band's instrumentation included Trude on guitar, Alcon on accordion, son Ben played drums, and daughters Marie played electric bass, Iris played flute and Orchid played the violin. Trude designed the colorful logo for the band and sewed the distinctive costumes that the family wore on stage. The band played for private clubs, and at community festivals like the Old West End Festival and the International Festival. They played for Christmas Around the World at the Toledo Zoo and performed at the Cosby Gardens, as well as for retirement communities and senior facilities. They also performed and were interviewed for TV stations in Toledo and Cleveland, and one of the tapings was broadcast in England via the BBC. Later, Trude, Alcon and Orchid joined "Servants in Song" a local Charismatic music group consisting of a 30-member band and choir. That band played at religious events and worship services throughout Toledo and outlying areas, including the annual Catholic Charismatic Renewals. The band released a professional recording in 1987. Professionally, Trude was a compression garment engineer at the Jobst Institute, where she designed compression garments for people who were recovering from severe burns. She worked there for over 25 years until her retirement at age 70. Following her retirement, Trude continued to sing, sew and enjoy gardening, bringing her Dutch flair for color and flowers to her front yard for all to see. Above all, Trude was very spiritual and deeply in love with Our Lord Jesus and Mother Mary. Her lifelong devotion to them was evidenced in the countless hours she spent at church (even serving as Sacristan for years at the Rosary Cathedral), and in continuous prayer till the very end of her life. Trude was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband Alcon Wevers and siblings Maria (Ria), Teresa (Resi), Gerardt, and Anton (Ton) and her grandson Ryan Strenke. She is survived by her brother Ben Rasing, and her children BenYahsmin (w/wife Karen) Wevers, Marie (w/husband Mark) Phillips, Iris (w/husband David) Strenke, Orchid Wevers; grandchildren Ashely and Eric Strenke, and great-grandchildren Skyler, Caleb, Carter, Jordan, Jayson and Justin. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, Ohio 43614 on Friday, July 24 from 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. where a Rosary Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral on Saturday, July 25 from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
