Barbara Ann Garwood

Barbara Malone Garwood (nee Manton) 1920-2016 Barbara Malone Garwood of Oak Leaf Village and formerly of The Hamlet in Perrysburg “shuffled off this mortal coil” on September 11th at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. She was born November 16th, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio to Kathleen and Paul Manton. She attended George Washington University and graduated from the University of Toledo with a degree in English Literature. Surviving Barbara are her daughter Paula, of Portland, Oregon, sons Thomas “Tim” (Susan) and Michael (Valerie) and grandchildren Meagan Hansen (Matthew) and Matthew Bracy also of Portland, Casey, Brendan (Allison), Garrett (Katie), Caitlin and Trevor Malone, Jennifer Dayton and five great-grandchildren. Barbara’s husband Thomas Francis Malone preceded her death in 1972. She later married Willis G. Garwood, long-time manager of the Toledo Club who died in 2009, her daughter Kathleen also preceded her in death, as did her beloved sister Martha and brother-in-law William Gall. Barbara was a long-time resident of Toledo, Ohio, and Naples, Florida, where she and Willis kept a second home. She was one of the first female stockbrokers at the Clark Dodge brokerage house and retired from The Andersons where she spent many years as John Anderson’s executive assistant. Her community service included numerous years as a board member of the Toledo Animal Shelter. Barbara enjoyed traveling and spent time with Willis visiting European, Mexican and Canadian locales. She also enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. The family would especially like to thank Barbara’s dear friend, Linda MacLaren, for her tireless attention and support of Barbara during her final illness. “Vodkas on the rocks for everyone!” In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Josina Lott Foundation (Josina Lott Residential & Community Services), Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Sunshine Foundation, Inc. or a charity of the donor’s choice. Visitation will be at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. on Thursday, September 15 from 4-8 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima, Perrysburg, Ohio on Friday, September 16 at 10:30 with a visitation prior beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Toledo Memorial Park.
