William John Meyer M.D.

William J. Meyer, M.D., age 84 of Maumee, Ohio, formerly of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on Sunday August 12, 2012, in the Elizabeth Scott Care Center. William was born on September 23, 1927 to H. Louis & Catherine Meyer in Dubuque, IA. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, IA with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1948, and St. Louis University with a Doctor of Medicine in 1952. Dr. Meyer moved to Toledo Ohio in 1952 to begin his OB-GYN Residency at St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center. He spent his career as an Obstetrician-Gynecologist until the time of his retirement in 1994. Dr. Meyer was a respected member of the following organizations: American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fellow of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Fellow of American Fertility Society, member of The Toledo Academy of Medicine, The Ohio State Medical Association, Courtesy Staff at Toledo Hospital, and an active staff member of St. Vincent Hospital and Medical Center where he served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for 8 years, and was Chief of Staff for 4 years. He also was clinical assistant professor at the Medical College of Ohio; an instructor of student nurses for 14 years, and associate director of medical education in OB-GYN. Dr. Meyer was also a member of the Toledo Opera Association, where he served on the Board of Trustees, he was a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, a member of the American Legion, past president the Lion’s Club and served on the Lion’s Club Blind Fund Committee, and was still an active member and past President of the Board of Trustee’s for Bittersweet Farms, an organization for autistic children. Dr. Meyer was an active member of St. Clement Church for many years as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was chairman of the youth sports and also the Fun Festival; he was the past President of the Advisory Council. Dr. Meyer was also an adult scouter, for 39 years. He volunteered with the Boys Scouts of America as an assistant Cub Master of Pack 195; he later became the Northwest District Training Chairman, committee member of Troop 195, and assistant scoutmaster of Troop 195, He later served as District Commissioner, District Advancement Chairman, Council Commissioner, Council President, and Council Board of Trustees of the Northwest District. He also was an Advisory Council Member, Eagle Scout Class of 1991-1992 Honoree, Merit Badge Counselor, Cub Master, and Camp Doctor from 1969 to 1994 for Camp Pioneer, and provided medical staffing for summer camp programs. Dr. Meyer also served as Council Vice President of Relationships/Membership (1989) at which time he organized the “New Unit Cultivation Dinner”, served as Council Vice President of both the Finance and Programs committees and was the Wood Badge Course Director. He received many awards from the Boys Scouts including the Scouter Training Award, Scouter’s Key-Cubmaster, Scouter’s Key-Commissioner, District Award of Merit-Northwest, St. George Award, Wood Badge Award, Order of the Arrow-Vigil and the Silver Beaver Award in 1974. He also purchased 2,000 harmonicas for all the boys in the East Central Region at the National Jamboree in 1988 and created the world’s largest Harmonica Band. Dr. Meyer was known as a fun loving, witty man and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Dr Meyer was preceded in death by his loving wife, Patricia; son, James and great-granddaughter Ruby Toczynski. He is survived by his children, Jan (Daniel) Toczynski, William Meyer, Tom (Joyce) Meyer, Kay (Tom) Asmus, Michael Meyer, Joseph Meyer and Beth Meyer; 29 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way and daughter-in-law, Denise Meyer. Family and friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Thursday August 16, 2012 from 2-8 p.m. where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday beginning at 10 a.m., in the mortuary, followed by the Funeral Mass at St. Joan of Arc Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Maumee Ohio. Memorials may take the form of contributions to either Bittersweet Farms Autistic Community or to the Boy Scouts of America.
