Patricia Ann Smith

Patricia Ann (Schoen) Smith embarked on her latest adventure on January 27, 2010. Born March 18, 1928, she was the sixth of Cliff and Katherine Schoen's seven children. While attending Ursuline College in Cleveland, she met John Carroll student Kevin F. Smith. They were married on March 31, 1951, and enjoyed a loving relationship for 55 years until Kevin's death in 2006. Seven children and twenty two grandchildren were the result of their love and devotion: Kevin and Mary Pat, Devon, Connor, Colin, Moira Smith; Christie and Frank, Drew, Jacqui, Adam, Madie Stichter; Sheila and Tom, Kendall Flanagan; Mike and Pat, Brad Smith; Shelley and Dan, Kyle, Laura, Kristen, Michelle Murnen; Laurie and Jeff, Stephen, Michael, Peter, Monica, Luke Yeager; and Pete and Alexis, Kayla, Nate, Delaney Smith. Pat was predeceased by brothers, Jack, Dick and Jim Schoen and sisters, Mary Uhl and Joanne Kurt. She is survived by sister, Peggy Wheeler. Pat had a generous and sharing heart. A dedicated and devoted mother she raised her seven children with boundless love and support. Her capacity for nurturing love extended beyond her children. She opened her house and cared for those in need including numerous unwed mothers and exchange students. She volunteered untold hours for the Little Sisters of the Poor and Mary's Adult Care. She also had an adventurous spirit, traveling all over the world on her own or with best friends Joanne and Eileen. Trips to Egypt, Italy and Medjugorje were interspersed between sojourns to the hot spots of current events. Pat loved to laugh and between her dry wit and ability to see the humor in almost any situation, she kept everyone smiling. That humor was the legacy gift to her children. Pat's biggest regret was not having her criminal record expunged after being handcuffed and jailed on a fugitive warrant for not paying a ticket for an unlicensed dog. An apologetic Judge Buddy Restivo released Pat and gave her a personal tour of the Courthouse. Stories and laughter may be shared Friday, January 29, 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd. The funeral will begin in the mortuary Saturday at 8:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in Gesu Church, 2049 Parkside Blvd. at 9:00 a.m. Interment Calvary Cemetery.
