Annabelle E. Wiley

Trusting in God’s love and living a grace-filled life of 101 years, Annabelle E. Wiley died at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Annabelle was born September 29, 1912 to Joseph and Vera Finerty in Holgate, Ohio. She was a proud graduate of Holgate High School and often gathered with her classmates to reminisce and catch up on one another’s lives. She attended St. Vincent School of Nursing and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1934. She met her future husband, Richard Wiley, when he was a patient at St. V’s. After graduation she worked as a private duty nurse for eleven years, married Richard in 1938 and gave birth to their only child, Marcia, in 1945. Annabelle was a feisty woman whose integrity and honesty, along with her gracious hospitality, welcomed everyone with a loving heart. She and Richard enjoyed many good times with a large group of friends with whom they traveled, played cards and shared many happy memories. In her earlier years, Annabelle was very active in the St. Vincent School of Nursing Alumni Association. She and her husband were avid bridge players and in her later years Annabelle was a valuable bridge player at the Maumee Senior Center. No longer able to see well enough to be the attentive bridge player, Annabelle played a card game called Spite and Malice and enjoyed winning and playing with great dignity. Annabelle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; and her brother, Raymond. She is survived by her daughter, Sister Marcia Wiley, a Gray Nun from Lexington, MA. Annabelle was grateful for the loving presence and care of her daughter who was missioned to care for her mother by her Order. Both Annabelle and Sister Marcia are especially grateful to Sister Jacqueline St. Ives, Congregational Leader and Sister June Ketterer, Area Coordinator, and the many Sisters who have supported them especially during the last five years. Though Annabelle’s immediate family was small, her gracious personality, warm wit and welcoming spirit led to a large group of friends and neighbors who will always remember her many kindnesses to them. Special thanks to her godson, Lurley (Judy) Archambeau; neighbors and friends, Jane and Nick Biniker (Samantha, Alex and Nicholas), Debbie and Chris Crossen, Pat and Ron Dumas, Peggy and Mike Kelly (Jacob and Emily), Shirley and LeMoyne Mercer, Emmie Saad, Nan and Dave Stark (Stefanie), Rick and Carol Toth, Anne Treglia, Anna Verhesen, Sister Mary Thill and Sister Maxine Young. A special thanks to Annabelle’s recent caregivers—Dr. Scott Lee; the Visiting Angels staff, especially Sandy Askam; and the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, especially Vickie Gedeon. Family and friends will be welcomed at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 Reynolds Road, from 3:00-8:00pm on Sunday, February 9, 2014. Sharing of memories will begin at 7:00pm in the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00am on Monday, February 10, 2014, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church with a luncheon following in the Church Hall. Interment at Lake Township Cemetery will follow the luncheon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent School of Nursing Alumni Association or Hospice of Northwest Ohio (Detroit Ave. site).
