Nancy M. Mettler

August 26, 1936 - January 23, 2022

Nancy Mettler, age 85, died peacefully on January 23. A lifelong resident of South Toledo, Nancy was born August 26, 1936 to Ruth and Harold VanTassel, grew up on Arlington Ave., and attended Libbey High School, graduating in 1954. In 1955 Nancy married Robert J Mettler, and together they raised seven children and a grandchild. Nancy felt her greatest accomplishment was raising a granddaughter with physical limitations to become a successful and independent woman. She was particularly proud to have once been invited to attend a medical conference, as an example of what could be accomplished, by any child, when provided proper nurturing coupled with high expectations. After raising her family, Nancy worked at St Vincent Medical Center in a variety of positions, from house-mother in the school of nursing to the credit department, retiring in 1991. In retirement, Nancy loved tending her meticulous garden, spending time with family, dancing, boating, and as a devout catholic, attending mass. Nancy was a lifelong member of St James parish until it's closure, after which she joined OLPH parish. Nancy's unique personality made her the life of the party, especially when it wasn't a party until she arrived and made it one! Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, son Joseph, her parents, whom she dearly missed, and dear friend Elizabeth (Betty) Price. She had faith they would all, one day, be reunited. Left to mourn are: Nancy's children, Michelle (William) Mohrbach, Michael, James, Robert (Diane), John (Laura) and Susan Mettler; brothers Robert (Roberta) VanTassel and Thomas (Barbara) VanTassel; sister Susan (John ) Granata; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Kind Hearts Hospice, St Clare Commons, Nancy, Vickie, Lisa, Mickey, and especially Terry, who became a dear friend to Nancy, for their wonderful daily care of our mother. Visitation will be Friday, January 28, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 2255 Central Grove Ave., Toledo, OH 43614 at 10:00 a.m., with Funeral Mass following at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
