    Melvin Duane Hurley

    May 8, 1948 - October 5, 2021

Mr. Melvin Hurley, 75, went to be with the Lord on October 5, 2021. Mel was born in Springfield, IL on May 8, 1946. He grew up in the Springfield area and graduated from Waverly High School, in Waverly, IL. Soon after graduation he enlisted the US Navy and was selected for their Nuclear Power Program. He served 6 years on the Nuclear Submarine LaFayette. On June 15, 1968 he married Linda DeCarlo in New Salem, PA. After serving his 6 years in the Navy, they moved to Ambridge, PA and worked as a Station Operator at the Duquesne Light Nuclear Power Plant. They bought their first home in East Liverpool, OH, living also in Bay City, MI, Glenmore, OH and finally settling in Northwood, OH. They lived there for 33 years and moved to Wilmington, NC after retirement. Some of Mel's favorite things to do are fishing, golf, reading books about the history of our country (very patriotic), bike riding, bird watching and vacationing with his children and grandchildren. He was quite the handyman, owned many tools and loved doing remodeling and fixing around the house. Mel loved being outdoors and kept a beautiful landscaped yard. Mel was a very spiritual and devoted Christian. He attended the Cedar Creek Church in Ohio and the Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC. He loved helping other people, whether it was a neighbor or working on church projects. He helped build the Cedar Creek satellite church in West Toledo, OH. Mel's greatest love in his life were his wife, children, grand-children and great grand-children. He was preceded in death by father Melvin Hurley and mother Agnes Atchison. He is survived by wife Linda, son Sean, daughter and son-in-law Carrie and Mike Williams, son and daughter-in-law Nathan and Connie. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and his brother Charles Hurley. He was an amazing man with a great smile. His family and many friends are left with a big hole in their hearts. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 23rd from11:00 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service with Military Honors, at 3:30 p.m. at Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., Toledo, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Tunnel to Towers .
