    David Edwin Eriksen

    February 2, 1937 - December 26, 2017

David Eriksen died peacefully at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on the morning of December 26, 2017. Many friends and relatives will dearly miss him. David was born in 1937 in Maumee to Edwin and Irene (Woodruff) Eriksen. He graduated from Maumee High School and Denison College. He graduated with honors from The Ohio State University Medical College. For over 50 years, he served the Toledo community as an ophthalmologist and prominent surgeon and was chief of ophthalmology at St. Vincent Hospital. He provided services to every hospital in Toledo, and maintained his own practice. Because he served in the army, he volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Clinic throughout his lifetime. During his leisure time, he could be found on the golf course playing with his close friends, or at his cottage on Lake Erie sailing his Hobie Cat and catching walleye. He was a classical music aficionado and an avid reader. His greatest enjoyment was being a Husband, Father and Grandfather. He married Susan Eriksen (Cornell) in 1962 and they went on to create a loving Family of 6 that would grow to 17. Dear Susan, who left us in 2012, preceded David in death. Words cannot describe the joyous times we spent together as a Family and they will forever remain in our hearts. David found love again when he married Mary Krill. Their time together was not long enough, but they made the most of life enjoying adventures across the country and overseas. He also touched the lives of Mary’s three daughters, their spouses and children. David is survived by his Wife Mary (Krill-Eriksen) and her 3 daughters and grandchildren, son Leif (Abel Grebenik), daughter Kirsten Homberger (Martin), daughter Heidi Bleyer (James), son Hans (Monica Rinckey) and 7 grandchildren: Maddie, Hannah and Nicholas Homberger; Mason, Elena and Abigail Bleyer; Frey Eriksen. Friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 4 at 12:00 p.m. at Gesu Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions to Mercy Autism Services or Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
