Naomi Ann Kowalski

Naomi Ann Kowalski passed away on December 17, 2025. She leaves behind a life marked by dedication to education, service, and family. Naomi was born on October 25, 1930 in Toledo to James and Susan (Dybala) Matuszek. She married her high school sweetheart Melvin in 1953. She devoted her professional life to teaching and nursing education, serving as a clinical instructor in pediatric nursing at St. Vincent Hospital, and a registered nurse. Naomi earned her degree in Education from Mary Manse College, and Master's from the University of Toledo. She was deeply committed to lifelong learning and the success of her students. Her teaching career spanned many years and included service at St. Agnes Elementary School and Bedford Middle School, as well as more than 20 years at Douglas Road Elementary School. Naomi was an active member of the National Education Association (NEA), Michigan Education Association (MEA), and MARSP; she also belonged to the Toledo Choral Society. Music had an important role in her life, and she especially enjoyed playing piano. She loved to read, travel throughout the United States with her husband Mel, and spend treasured time baking with her grandchildren. Naomi is survived by her son Robert and her daughter Dr. Kathleen (Gary) Gunther; her beloved grandchildren Olivia, Elizabeth, and Benjamin Gunther. She is also survived by two special nephews, Rick Napierala and Robert Matuszek; great nephew Richard Napierala; and sister-in-law Myra Matuszek. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melvin in 2009; her sister Gloria Napierala; and her brothers Leonard, Richard, and John Matuszek. Naomi will be remembered for her devotion to education, her love of family, her quiet strength, and the kindness she shared so freely with others. Her legacy lives on in the many students she taught and the family she loved so dearly. Naomi's wish was to donate her body to science. A Memorial Mass will be held on February 7, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns Catholic Church. Coyle Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
