Frank E. Miller

Frank E. Miller, age 85, passed away Friday, April 17, 2015 in St Luke’s Hospital. Frank was born on May 31, 1929 in Marion Ohio to Carl and Alverta Miller and attended Marion Harding High School. On July 11, 1951 he married the former Vera Lamb at Park Creek Church in Carleton, Michigan and from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War, Frank served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Frank moved to Toledo, Ohio in the 1950’s as a crane operator. In 1962 the Lucas County Port Authority hired him as an equipment operator and supervisor on the overseas docks. In 1975 Frank was named the Director of the Seaport. He was instrumental in establishing the Toledo Seaport on a national and international level. Frank was the man behind the seaport’s “Big Lucas” gantry crane. He designed and operated the large cargo handling crane for many years and taught many others to do the same. Frank left the port authority and started his own company, Toledo World International in east Toledo and retired in the 1990’s as the owner and publisher of Business Venture Magazine. Frank was the past president of the Council of Lake Erie Ports and the International Association of Great Lake Ports and had been a director of the American Association of Port Authorities. His interests were politics, a great game of golf, Ohio State Football and spending time on the docks at the Port Authority. He loved his family and his favorite pastime was to follow his grandchildren in all of their endeavors. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, and his son Larry. He is survived by his loving wife Vera; children Dr. Gary (Brenda) Miller, Dr. Brian (Dawn) Miller, Linda Miller; 5 grandchildren: Kurstyn (Brian) Loeffler, Chase (Nicole)Miller, Hannah, Rachel and Kelbee Miller; 1 great granddaughter Eva Mae Loeffler; daughter-in-law Vicki Miller; sister Sharron Garn; and many sister-in-laws; brother-in-laws; nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 2 P.M. on Sunday May 31st, 2015 In Olivet Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5840 Monroe St. Sylvania, OH 43560.
