Evelyn Mae (Parker) Barefoot

Evelyn M. Barefoot, 93, of Perrysburg, died in St. Luke’s Hospital on February 18, 2014 following a brief illness. Born on January 6, 1921 in Toledo to George and Jesse Mabel Parker, she was the sixth of eight remarkable children. Evelyn graduated from Libbey High School in 1939, meeting the love of her life, Charles R. Barefoot, Jr. on their lucky day, June 3. Married at the outset of World War II, Evy, like many war brides, accompanied her husband from base to base. So homesick for Toledo, she then vowed never again to move far from the Toledo area. In fact, she remained intensely loyal to northwest Ohio, utterly convinced that nowhere else on the planet could hold a candle to it. Of the many adjectives to describe our mom, loyal is one of the most fitting. She was a mother and grandmother lioness, fierce in defense of her cubs. This loyalty, coupled with her great gifts as a homemaker produced a woman who selflessly served her very fortunate extended family and circle of friends. Exceptionally talented as a gourmet cook, needlewoman, interior designer and hostess extraordinaire, we were truly blessed as the recipients of her gifts. As a master genealogist, she also left an astounding legacy, lovingly, painstakingly compiled, especially after acquiring expertise on the computer as an octogenarian. At one time, Evelyn was a member of several bridge and garden clubs and of Pilgrim Church. As a Girl Scout leader and volunteer for Meals on Wheels, she touched many people during her long and happy life. Evelyn’s survivors, heartbroken at her loss, include son Jeff Barefoot; daughter Shari O’Brien; grandchildren David (Amy) Eason, Bethany, Brad and Ben Barefoot, Danny O’Brien; and great grandchildren Parker and Patrick Eason. In addition, her sweet sister Gertrude Thume and many special nieces and nephews survive. She was preceded in death by her darling husband Charles and six siblings. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Sylvania First United Methodist Church, 7000 Erie St., Sylvania, Ohio, where friends will be received from 12 – 2 pm. Tributes may be made to the Salvation Army. Tiny as she was, Evelyn Barefoot was larger than life.
