Charles D. Whitley

Heaven gained another angel when Charles D. Whitley, age 84, of Toledo, OH passed away on Monday, August 26, 2013 to be with his beautiful bride once again. He left this world a better place because of the good man he was, in the loving presence of his children and with the love of the rest of his family from across the nation. He was born on April 25, 1929 to Odell & Margaret (Dean) Whitley in Wendell, NC, the oldest of 6 children. Family was everything to Chuck, growing up with lots of music & singing in the house and enjoying life’s simple joys & accomplishments. He was a graduate of Churchland High School in Portsmouth, VA and went into the Army where he met the love of his life, Clara, at a USO dance. Their courtship traversed every street in Washington, D.C., and they had more fun than anyone these days could imagine on virtually no money. They married on May 2, 1953 in Clara’s hometown of Steubenville, OH. Once Chuck began his career with Sun Oil Co. his job took him & his family from VA to FL to NC to OH where he retired. He was a devoted husband, Dad and “Papa” who was always there for his family with a helping hand, listening ear and encouraging words. All who met him liked him, and he had far more than 2 children and 1 grandchild in his life! Friends of his “kids” were adopted into his heart and always welcomed to “come along” with anything we were doing. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Clara, his parents Odell & Margaret Whitley, and brother George Whitley. He is survived by daughter Susan (Dave) Martis & precious granddaughter Amanda Martis of Toledo, son Stephen Whitley of Columbus, OH, sister Fay (Billy) Brown of Culpeper, VA, sister Ann (Jack) Mathieson of Tampa, FL, brother Ben (Molly) Whitley of Chesapeake, VA, sister Nancy Bradford of Chatham, VA, as well as many nieces & nephews who will all miss his kind & generous soul. Family and friends may visit at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd., on Thursday, August 29th from 2-8 p.m. where a prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 30th beginning at 10:30 a.m., in the mortuary, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joan of Arc Church at 11 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery. A special thank you to all who had a hand in his medical care over the months & years – he enjoyed all of you & learned a lot from you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lutheran Village of Wolf Creek or St. Luke’s Hospital.
