Kathleen May

Kathleen May, age 80, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Thursday, January, 16, 2014. To all who knew her, she was simply known as “Grandma Kay.” Kathleen was born on March 2, 1933, and grew up in rural Morgantown, West Virginia. Boyd and Hilda Hovatter, her parents, raised 3 boys and 5 girls on their farm, where the family also mined coal. For the past 50 years, Kathleen resided in Toledo, Ohio, where she shared her life with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her children include Ron May (Mary), Budd May (Carla), Edward May (Corey), and a special daughter Dianne Miller-Roach (Terry). Her grandchildren include: Heather Reiter (Ryan), Jason May, Melissa May, Tara May, Samantha May, Taylor Holbrook, Logan Holbrook, Max Holbrook, Maria Mitchell, Nicholas Mitchell, Nolan Mitchell, Anthony Mitchell, and Crystal Roach. We all know Kathleen was known as “Grandma Kay” to all children who knew her…they loved her and she in return. She loved her friends and family fiercely, taking the best care of all around her. Throughout her life she enjoyed gardening, sewing, decorating for holidays, and above all cooking and feeding those around her. “Grandma Kay’s” house was a place wherein one could seek refuge…to grab a cup of coffee, good advice, and a solution for every problem…all while sitting on her big front porch overlooking the most fabulous lawn. You may laugh at this if you knew her well, as no one could make the lines straight like she could! Without question you certainly were fed when stopping by for a visit, and we all are familiar with the favorites: chicken noodle soup, taco salad, mashed potatoes with roast, chili, and those “snacks & stuff” that your parents never wanted you to have! And let us not forget to wash it down with a cold can of coke…they (like the rest of the meal) always seemed to taste better at her house. “ A summer day she appears with popsicles, all the kids are smiling and yelling, “red, orange, pink, but no green…I don’t want that one!” Patiently she replies, “There’s a whole box, you can all have your choice.” With a smile on her lips, white hair shining in the sun, she hands each child their choice. As always, she has exactly what’s needed to make everyone happy.” And that best summarizes “Grandma Kay” to those of us who knew and loved her… she had exactly what was needed to make everyone happy. We should all take comfort in knowing that she is no longer struggling, and that she passed with ease… her family by her side. Rejoice! For we now know that “Grandma Kay” has everything she needs Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-8 pm.at the Coyle Funeral Home, 1770 S. Reynolds Rd .where a memorial service will be held at 7pm.
