- Graduated from St. Francis DeSales High School in 1962
- Attended Xavier University, in Cincinnati, Ohio graduating in 1966
with a B.S. in Economics
- Co-captain of Xavier football team 1965-66
- Served in the U.S. Army at Fort Polk, Louisiana for two years as
a first and second lieutenant
- Attended the Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science, graduating
in 1970 and serving as senior class president
- Joined the Coyle Funeral Home in 1970
- Past President of the Toledo Area Xavier Alumni Club
- Professionally licensed in Ohio as a Funeral Director and Embalmer
- Served as Chairman of the Board of the Elizabeth Zepf Community
Mental Health Center in 1984-85
- Past President of the Northwest Ohio Funeral Director's Association

- Recipient of the "Silver Slate" award from the Toledo Board of
Education for service to Bowsher High School
- Active member of the Maumee Rotary Club and a past President of
Maumee Rotary Club from 1992-93
- 1994 recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award for exemplary service

- Joe has two daughters, Megan and Katie, son Jeremiah and lives in
South Toledo with his wife Bonnie
